In 1942 an aircraft carrier was built for the US navy for use in WWII and deployed to the Pacific fleet in February 1943, arriving in Pearl Harbour on 9th August. Most naval vessels were painted in dazzle camouflage but this ship was commissioned for battle before it could be fully painted, leaving it a ghostly blue.
It was reported sunk by the Japanese no less than four times leading Japanese propagandists to nickname her “The Blue Ghost”
This ship was called the USS Lexington
Fun fact: in 1980, USS Lexington became the first aircraft carrier in US naval history to have women stationed as crew members.
